My Fair Lady “Eliza” Cosplay Wig Design

I styled this wig for a private client to go with a gorgous costume she had made, that emulated the “Embassy Ball Scene” costume Audrey Hepburn wore playing Eliza Doolittle in the classic movie MY FAIR LADY (1964) which was set in 1912. The costume designer for the movie, Cecil Beaton, based his Oscar-winning designs on the early Edwardian (1910-1920) period. My client asked for a wig design that wasn’t quite as elaboate as the one in the movie, but that clearly took inspiration from it. We started with a thickly-wefted synthetic lacefront wig that already had the perfect set for this design. However, as you can see from the pics, the hairline at the forehead was far too narrow, so I began by modifying it to give it more width and a small widow’s peak, then I thinned out the wefts so that the finished wig would not be quite so heavy, THEN I began the process of styling it. A big bumpit and bobbypins for days. Final effect: SO ELEGANT!

About Dorian

Dorian Taylor is a multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago, Illinois, who uses devised/physical theatre, puppetry, spoken word, visual media, music, spatial soundscapes, and stagecraft to create original performance work.

Dorian is inspired by nature and our curious relationship with it: we are part of nature, yet we separate ourselves from it. Her work investigates connections between people and the natural world through lyrical interpretations of science. In a world where cutting-edge technologies and outdated myths divide us from nature, Dorian seeks to reunify us with it.

Dorian’s artistic influences include Jacques Lecoq (physical theatre), Thomas Prattki (devised theatre, embodied dramaturgy), Mummenschanz (physical theatre/mask), Complicité/THE ENCOUNTER (spatial audio), Jim Henson (edutainment, puppetry), Carolena Nericcio (improvisational choreography), and Davina Porter (voice acting).
