I created hair, wig, facial hair and makeup designs for this show, and post-explosion wounds for Mr. DePinna. I created illustrations for the renderings of all the female characters. This play debuted in 1936, and Ryan requested looks that were mostly of that decade. 1930s styles were conservative/naturalistic compared to the styles of the 1920s and 1940s, and were influenced by The Great Depression. The slicked-back hair of the men, and the thin, arched eyebrows and natural-looking wavy/curly hair of the women, were distinctive to this decade. We decided that Penny’s and Mrs. Kirby’s looks would be influenced by 1920s “flappers” since those characters had been adults during that decade.
